That’s why mid-tier options like the new Hisense U8H are the best bet for most people. Besides some slightly annoying feet, it’s become one of my favorite new models for most people.

Hisense might not be as familiar a brand name as, say, Sony or LG, but that doesn’t mean it makes poor-quality products. I’ve been a fan of its laser projectors and TVs for years now. It has a “best-for-most” philosophy that places it somewhere alongside Vizio and TCL.

The star of the show is mini LED backlighting with 528 zones of local dimming. This means the backlight is able to adjust specific brightness to each part of the screen, helping those dark scenes really pop. Just like with other models in the price range, you’ll get AMD FreeSync and low input lag (the time between you pulling the trigger on your controller and #angryenemy420 in Call of Duty getting blown to bits). That means the TV doubles as a pretty decent gaming monitor and works well for online console gaming.

Physically, there’s not much to write about except for the TV’s unshapely legs. It’s a relatively plain black rectangle with thin bezels … and two stork-like feet. The mounts can be placed close enough inside the TV’s edge that they’ll fit on a normal TV stand (thank God). But unless your TV stand is 20 inches deep, they’re too long and pointy for you to put a soundbar in front of them. Right now, about half of the legs are hanging off the back of my TV stand so I can fit a soundbar there too. I’d stick to wall mounting (or considering an aftermarket pedestal mount).

Other than that, the U8H is actually a very convenient display to set up and actually use, especially for anyone with a Google account. With most TVs, I recommend that you get an external dongle; this is one of the few where I don’t. The Android TV operating system is super easy to navigate, and makes it exceptionally simple to log in to apps using your phone.

In a dark room, it easily provides accurate, beautiful picture that represents all of my favorite movies and TV shows well. And when pumped to a higher brightness setting for daytime viewing, the mini LED backlighting and high dynamic range really help the TV shine.

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what ULED means. The U stands for Ultra, and Hisense claims this means that 20 different patents have been applied in these models, versus lower-tier TVs that don’t have the same color quality, local dimming, and motion processing abilities. I think it’s probably just marketing. That makes ULED unlike QLED or OLED, which actually imply different display technologies are on board (quantum dots and organic LEDs, to be specific).

But who cares what they call their high-end LED TV tech: The U8H looks great when watching just about anything. From Forza to real Formula 1 livestreams, it was smooth in gaming and when watching sports. It also handles darker scenes very well—I watched that aforementioned super dark Game of Thrones episode on this actual review unit when it came out. It looked great, and I had no idea what the fuss was about until I popped into my Twitter feed.

It’s frankly astonishing just how good TVs have gotten year over year. We’re really starting to hit a point where content is able to really use these modern screens to its advantage, but older TVs really struggle, as evidenced by HBO’s recent color grading debacle. As more of us end up with TVs this good in our living rooms over the next decade or so, I expect content creators to go darker, brighter, and wackier with their choices. That makes the U8H a solid choice.
